Recipe: Breakfast Stromboli

If you’re looking for a hearty and delicious way to kickstart your day, then look no further than the Breakfast Stromboli. This inventive twist on the classic Italian dish is perfect for brunch or even a quick weekday breakfast. Filled with eggs, cheese, and your favourite breakfast meats, this rolled pastry is as comforting as it is easy to prepare. Let’s dive into this scrumptious recipe that will not only satisfy your morning cravings but also impress family and friends.

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 cups (250g) strong white bread flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3/4 cup (180ml) warm water

For the Filling:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 100g (3.5oz) cheddar cheese, grated
  • 100g (3.5oz) cooked sausage, chopped (or bacon, ham, or any preferred breakfast meat)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, diced (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Thyme or chives, fresh or dried (optional, for added flavour)

For Egg Wash:

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • A splash of milk

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough:

In a large mixing bowl, combine the strong white bread flour, salt, sugar, and instant yeast. Make a well in the centre and add the olive oil and warm water. Mix until a dough forms. If the mixture seems too sticky, add a little more flour; if it’s too dry, add a splash more water.

Once combined, knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until it’s smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp tea towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

2. Prepare the Filling:

While the dough is rising, whisk together the eggs in a bowl. In a frying pan, sauté the chopped onion and bell pepper (if using) over medium heat until softened. Add the cooked sausage or your choice of breakfast meat and continue cooking until warmed through. Pour in the beaten eggs and cook until just set, stirring occasionally. Season with salt, pepper, and herbs if you’re using them. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before mixing in the grated cheese.

3. Assemble the Stromboli:

Once the dough has risen, preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan oven) or 400°F. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle (approximately 30x40cm).

Spread the egg mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough, leaving about a 2.5cm (1 inch) border around the edges. Starting from one long side, carefully roll the dough away from you to form a log. Pinch the seams to seal and tuck the edges in to prevent the filling from escaping.

4. Bake the Stromboli:

Transfer the rolled Stromboli to a lined baking tray. To give it a golden finish, brush the top with the egg wash (beaten egg mixed with a splash of milk). Using a sharp knife, make a few shallow cuts on top of the Stromboli to allow steam to escape during baking.

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

5. Serve:

Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing into generous pieces. Breakfast Stromboli is delicious on its own, but you can also serve it with a side of salsa, hot sauce, or a refreshing salad for a complete meal.

Conclusion

Breakfast Stromboli is a versatile dish that allows you to customise the fillings according to your cravings or what you have on hand. With its flaky exterior and warm, cheesy interior, this savoury delight is sure to become a favourite in your breakfast repertoire. Perfect for meal prep or a special weekend brunch, this recipe will surely keep you satisfied all morning long. Enjoy your cooking!
